Meyer Memorial Trust held a series of engagement sessions with Oregon’s Latine/x/a/o community that provided a space to reflect, heal, and plan. After the sessions, Meyer wanted to keep the conversation going.
Meyer commissioned a visually engaging and informative report design that summarized the issues, solutions, and calls to action that came out of those meaningful conversations. The result was a celebratory reflection on tradition mixed with a youthful tone of action, urgency, and optimism that could be distributed to fellow community members and policymakers.
Bilingual Design
An inspiring call to action, designed in both English and Spanish
The purpose of this report goes beyond the informative. The Latine/x/a/o engagement group wanted Visión Comunitaria: Listening & learning from the Growing Latine/x/a/o Community’s Vision to be a call to action for their entire community. A top priority was to create a flexible layout that accommodated Spanish translations of the English text flawlessly and naturally.
Defining the experience goals
Celebratory
Root visuals and tone in the tradition and joy of the community and the state of Oregon.
Visionary
Convey the sense of imagination, manifestation, and action around the future of the community.
Youthful
Reflect the energy of the newest generation of Latine/x/a/o advocates. Signal the new strength behind this movement.
Educational
Use hard metrics and visionary quotes from the community to contextualize the need for this work and inspire readers to get involved.
Custom illustrations that reflect tradition and growth
The various illustrations needed to capture long-standing cultural traditions and also frame the vision of the future in a celebratory and active way. Vibrant colors, textures, and patterns were applied to marigolds, sage, and pine trees — traditional symbols of growth, community, and environment within Oregon’s Latine/x/a/o population — to create a visually immersive and engaging experience that conveyed both joy and urgency.
Flexibly formatted for print and digital
In addition to being bilingual, the report design was designed to easily translate between digital and printed formats. This allowed Meyer the flexibility to create a more formal experience for distribution to lawmakers, community leadership, and businesses, while also being able to quickly distribute and deliver digital versions to the community at large — to reach the largest audience possible.
When I think of the phrase ‘labor of love’ this report embodies that in full. Every page sings. From their deep listening, to their graceful project management, to their meltingly gorgeous design work, this whole process reflects the strength and heart in Smith & Connors’ collaborative spirit.
